An electrocardiogram is a recording of the heart’s electrical activity. Electrocardiograms can be used to diagnose heart conditions in both people and animals. They are safe and noninvasive procedures that can be performed right here in our office.

At Animal Hospital of Putnam, we provide top-notch electrocardiography (ECG) services on-site as well as consultations with cardiology specialists. All our veterinarians and technicians are highly trained and can be trusted to ensure your pet’s safety and comfort throughout the process.

How It Works

Our vets perform ECGs by placing electrodes on the pet’s skin, usually on their chest and legs. Your pet may be lying down or standing and will likely not need any sedation or anesthesia. These electrodes – painless clips – record the heart’s electrical activity for anywhere from 30 seconds to 2 minutes. From there, our vets can then review the ECG tracing.

Though ECGs are generally administered when there is a concern about a potential heart condition, they may be advised in a variety of situations.
